Why can’t women afford a cheap haircut?
I know it’s been a long time since my last Blog. If anyone actually bothered reading it or even missed my ramblings please accept my heartfelt apologies… Laziness is a serious condition but my struggle goes on.
So, to the subject of, ‘why women cannot afford a cheap haircut’.
I will come clean from the off. I haven’t a clue. But, just because you don’t know the answer doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask the question.
This particular conundrum popped into my head during my recent bi-monthly trip to the local hair salon. (Salon may be a touch grand for the place I visit but you get the picture).
I was being looked after by a friendly, highly professional young woman who, although she spoke not a word of English, understood precisely what all my arm waving and gesturing was about.
When it came to settle up, the cost of my glamorous new look, 120 CZK. Okay a bit more than pennies but still that’s roughly half what it would have cost me in the UK. A handy saving, I think you’ll agree.
As I gloated on my financial good fortune it brought to mind one of life’s absolute truisms. No matter which country you go to in the world a woman’s haircut seems to be ten times the price of a man’s.
So what is it that makes a woman pay almost anything for a wash, trim and blow dry while blokes, (me at least), wouldn’t dream of it?
The reasons seem to be two fold.
1: Women need insurance.
The equation goes something like: the more you spend the more care a hairdresser will take and therefore the less likely it is your head will end up looking like a dog’s dinner.
Personally I’m not sure you should always rely on this kind of thinking but for some any chance of avoiding this kind of hair disaster is a small price to pay.
2: Men can’t see hair.
Radical I know but consider the evidence. Men never use a hairbrush unless it’s to help reach something that has fallen under the bathroom cabinet.
We don’t shave often enough, (apparently).
We are not aware of the embarrassing growths that sprout from our nose, ears or back.
And, most serious of all, we have a genetic blind-spot when it comes to noticing a woman has just spent one week’s wages on a stunning new haircut.
Of course I accept not EVERY women would rather spend money on a good hairstyle instead of lunch. And not every man is as Neanderthal as me…
I’m not citing this as a criticism either. For goodness sakes, even I slap on a squirt of soothing aftershave balm when I remember but I’m a long way short of metro-sexual.
As I see it women just don’t get bad haircuts… and I have had several.
However I think the few crowns I invested in my latest look was money well spent. I’m happy to take this small risk every other month. So I’m gonna stick with my cheap trim thank-you very much and leave the expensive stuff to those who can actually appreciate it.
