Yoani Sanchez was listed among the 100 most influential people in the
world in 2008 by the American weekly magazine Time. She is known only
to a selected audience that understands Spanish and cares about what
is really happening in Cuba, though. Yoani is the most famous blogger
from Fidel´s island. Her blog, http://www.desdecuba.com/generaciony/,
is often unaccessible, thanks to a filter, imported by Raúl Castro
from China, which slows the connection. A more sure way to get to her

So far she has not been visited by the police nor physically harassed
because of her blog posts, which are not exactly political or
dissident, just an honest account of a Cuban citizen on the ironies
and paradoxes of daily life in El Comandante´s island. However, she
has been impeded from attending a ceremony, last Wednesday, in Madrid,
where she would be given the most important journalistic award of the
Spanish-speaking world, the Ortega y Gasset Prize, delivered by the
daily El País. Cuban authorities ignored Spain´s invitation and
refused to answer her request for a passport and an exit visa.
