Ask Andrej!
Babisology will become a new science.
Shall we soon learn what it is like to live under a government dependent upon the whim of an individual?
Andrej Babis is no saint. Nor is he a substitute for a political system built on clear and enforceable rules.
Are we to wait for his return from the Cote d'Azur to discover if ANO 2011 will condescend to form a government? Or whether he will wait until Zeman has put the final nail in Sobotka's political coffin? Does anyone around Andrej even know if he would like to hold a formal position in any government? Or whether he is Zeman's willing collaborator in the project of degrading the parliamentary political party?
How long will a man in the habit of exercising total personal control over his business tolerate the chaos and compromise inherent in democratic decision-making?
Will Andrej take to politics and master the gentle art of persuasion? Or will he follow the example of his billionaire twin, Bidzina Ivanishvili, who has just announced that he has had enough of being the prime minister of Georgia after a year in the office, and will appoint another to govern in his place, and on his behalf. Will Andrej lead from the front or from behind?
Let us hope that Andrej will adopt democratic habits of behaviour early on in his political career. Otherwise we shall all be forced to develop a new and rarified branch of political science devoted to the study of 'What Andrej Thinks and Why'. Lobbyists, journalists and diplomats will have to become expert 'babisologists' if they are to preserve their reputations as informed insiders and observers of the Czech political scene.
Access to Andrej has just become a most valuable commodity indeed. And anyone who controls access to him will enjoy almost as much power as Andrej himself. And be just as hard to hold to account.
One commentator has observed that Andrej's political ventures will likely harm his business ventures. I doubt it. All those who have invested their hopes in him should pay particular attention to his commercial interests over the coming months and years.
